Dear Parent or Guardian,

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year at the William Gaynor Campus Schools. My name is Matthew Finn and I am the new librarian for the Lyons, Green and Leadership schools here at the on campus.

I have a background working in libraries and hold a Master of Science in Information and Library Sciences from Pratt Institute here in Brooklyn. After working as a librarian, I moved into publishing for several years, and later became a teacher of English as a Second Language, earning a Master of Science in Education at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus and teaching at Grover Cleveland High School in Queens. Starting this year, I’ll combine both aspects of my career history to serve the students, parents, teachers and staff on campus.

This semester, the library re-opens its doors after a year of closure. The catalog for our small collection had been discarded during the transition and it is currently being be rebuilt by parent and student volunteers. The student walk-in hours are 10:45 – 12:30 during the day, and 3:00 – 5:00 after school.

Through the work of Ms. Pitzele at the Green School, we have received funding for a much-needed complete renovation of the library’s space and materials.

To make sure everyone’s voice is heard during the planning and process and beyond, I am forming a Library Advisory Committee, which will include parents, students, teachers and school staff. Please contact me if you are interested in being a part of this new and exciting center for student success. I can be contacted either by e-mail at mfinn4@schools.nyc.gov with the words “Library Advisory Committee: Parent Interest” or you can print out the letter and form below, fill it out and mail it me c/o Library Advisory Committe, William Gaynor Campus Schools, 223 Graham Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206.

Thank you and best wishes for a happy and productive school year.
